Why Don't You Use Artificial Wreaths?

Modified on Fri, 29 May at 9:29 AM

Wreaths Across America places wreaths made from live evergreen boughs for two important reasons: symbolism and participation in our mission.

The Symbolic Importance of Live Evergreens

The first reason is rooted in the meaning behind the wreaths themselves.

As an organization, Wreaths Across America considers Gold Star families—families who have lost a loved one during military service—to be a guiding North Star for our mission. Gold Star Mother Suzanne Brochu shared with us the significance of placing live evergreen wreaths in honor of her son and the powerful symbolism they represent.

Evergreens remain vibrant and green throughout the year, symbolizing endurance, strength, and the continuation of memory. This symbolism aligns closely with our mission to Remember the fallen, Honor those who serve, and Teach future generations the value of freedom.

Supporting the Mission Through Action

The second reason is practical and mission-focused.

While it may seem more economical to purchase artificial wreaths and reuse them each year, we have observed that locations pursuing this approach often experience a decline in volunteer participation after only a year or two.

The heart of the Wreaths Across America mission is the act of coming together to Remember, Honor, and Teach. Taking the time to place a fresh wreath each year—especially during one of the busiest seasons—is a meaningful act of service and remembrance.

The annual placement of live wreaths offers volunteers, families, and communities an opportunity to honor our nation’s heroes actively. Although it may not be the easiest or most convenient approach, it is a small gesture when considered in the context of the sacrifices made by those who served and gave their lives for our freedom.
