What Does the Perpetually Lit Christmas Tree Signify?

Modified on Wed, 3 Jun at 1:38 PM

The perpetually lit Christmas tree stands as a year-round tribute to all service members—past, present, and future—who have spent the holiday season away from their families and loved ones while serving our nation.

This special tree honors the sacrifices made by members of the military, regardless of religion, creed, or background. It serves as a reminder that the dedication and service of those who protect our freedoms should always be remembered and appreciated.

Inspiration Behind the Tree

The lighting of the tree and the theme, “The Christmas They Never Had,” were inspired by veteran Sir Stanley Wojtusik, a World War II prisoner of war and survivor of the Battle of the Bulge. His experiences and sacrifices helped shape this meaningful tribute to service members who missed holiday celebrations in service to the country.

Tree Dedication

The perpetually lit Christmas tree bears the following dedication:

“The Christmas They Never Had. Wreaths Across America dedicates this perpetually lit tree in honor of those men and women who, in service to our country, were separated from loved ones during the holiday season. Regardless of religious beliefs or creed, their sacrifice must always be remembered. July 9, 2011.”

The tree remains illuminated year-round as a lasting symbol of remembrance, gratitude, and respect for all who have served and sacrificed.
