Do You Place Wreaths on Jewish Headstones?

Wreaths Across America (WAA) is not affiliated with any religion or political party. Our yearlong mission is to Remember the fallen, Honor those who serve and Teach the next generation the value of freedom.

As guests at more than 5,500 participating locations nationwide, WAA and our volunteers follow the policies and guidance of each cemetery, memorial site, and participating location regarding the placement of veterans’ wreaths.

Wreath Placement on Headstones Marked with the Star of David

Unless otherwise advised by cemetery leadership, WAA asks volunteers not to place wreaths on headstones marked with the Star of David. This practice is intended to respect traditional Jewish customs, which generally do not include placing living flowers, wreaths, or laurels on gravesites.

Instead, volunteers are encouraged to pause, pay their respects, and say the servicemember’s name aloud to honor and remember their service.

Family Requests and Exceptions

There are exceptions to this guidance. Many families of Jewish servicemembers specifically request that a veteran’s wreath be placed on their loved one’s grave. When such requests are known, those wishes will be honored.

Additionally, volunteers are asked not to remove wreaths that are already placed on headstones marked with the Star of David, as they may have been placed there by family members or loved ones.
